Developing school schedules can be a cumbersome task for school districts. Many districts spend as many as six months forming schedules for the upcoming school year due to rapidly-evolving state requirements, teacher availability, class sizes, and other complex constraints.

District administrators approached Data317 to analyze their scheduling data and build an AI software solution that would generate a schedule in minutes, not months.

Applying AI to Build Class Schedules

Data317 built an integration into the school district’s calendar and ingested each school’s unique constraints and requirements. Applying graph coloring, a technique of coloring vertices of a graph so that no two adjacent vertices are the same color, Data317’s data scientists could visualize and automatically assemble an optimal class schedule for each district.

For the school district, they received a straightforward spreadsheet outlining the best-possible course schedule in less than 5 minutes.

Outcomes

With the new scheduling system in place, school districts have more time and resources to focus on the important task of teaching our children. Administrators can make crucial decisions immediately without fear, as generating a new class schedule is fast and simple.

Over the past year, teachers have also been more effectively allocated, and the district has successfully reduced class imbalances. This has resulted in a better overall educational experience for students and teachers!
